I’ve known Helen Pearson for a good many years, and love the way her brides look natural.
When considering your wedding makeup, I always think it’s important to ensure you look like you on the wedding day. Afterall, you want your groom to recognise you when you come down the aisle :)
Finding someone who gets that, and will work with you on your look, to ensure your wedding make up matches you and your day perfectly is vital. And I know Helen is that lady!
So passionate and excited about the industry, catching up with Helen in the interview the other day was fabulous!
After a change in career from nursing to wedding makeup, following an obsession with makeup that started with Sophie Ellis Bexter, and the iconic Green Eye-shadow from “Murder on the Dancefloor”…it was onto her first wedding, at The Moat House…
“It was just fantastic and the bug of weddings totally bit! It went from there and the excitement the adrenaline grew as each and every wedding is different, and it’s it’s just fantastic!”
As I’ve said, Helen LOVES this industry!!
This quote from Helen really resonated with me:
“The bride still wants to look like herself, but a radiant, more polished version of herself.”
For me, that is exactly it!! It’s the same with my couples on their wedding day when it comes to the portraits. It’s totally about being YOU, and me capturing that! Not you posing…instead, being true to yourselves, and looking amazing doing so!
” I can’t tell you the feeling that it gives you when you hand the bride the mirror to show her the finished makeup on the wedding day. You imagine doing that every day. I’m on a high every day with making that person feel special!”
As someone who has never booked a makeup artist, I asked Helen to talk through the process for her brides.
“A lot of brides come to me from my website or on Facebook and Instagram. After sending me photographs of what she likes just to make sure I am the right type of makeup artist for her, we go through the details for the day and I’ll send out a little questionnaire about her dress, who her designer is, to start to build an image. I also ask how she looks after her skin, then invites the bride two to three months before the wedding to do a trial.
With a girly morning chatting about style, the theme, how she wants to look, building the excitement and then that’s when it all starts to come together.
I also go through about the run of the morning, and how long each makeup application will take and, I also go through about how a bride and the bridesmaids look after their skin because this is something that can do on the wedding morning.”
I love how Helen really advises and helps her brides; it’s not simply a case of applying makeup, it’s ensuring everything is in place for you too!
From the trial it’s all about tweaking, experimenting and adjusting until it’s perfect. From here it’s all recorded down infinite detail, ensuring come the wedding morning, everything is perfectly in-hand!
“I like it when my bride hasn’t got to worry about anything. She can just sit there and enjoy!”
Talking timings with Helen was also really helpful too, understanding the scheduling of the wedding morning, with the allotted hour per person allowing for extra time on the wedding day.
In the run-up to the wedding day, as all the stresses start, it must be wonderful to have Helen on the end of a message, allowing you to talk to her and ask advice. From emergency skin care to talking about your pre-wedding tan, she’s always at the end of the phone!
Something that caught my eye when Helen started producing them, was her Vlogs – something I’ve found out her brides absolutely love!
” I record the morning of the wedding when I’m there, and when I finish the wedding I I go home and I put a vlog together of all the little videos of the wedding morning. I put these on YouTube so everyone can watch it, and the brides love it! It’s it’s a little bit extra.”

Something I also love about them is you can truly see how the brides look on the wedding day – no filters, no tweaking, real and perfect!
I’ve been at many weddings over the years, when as soon as the makeup or hair is completed, the stylist has packed their bags and left!
Helen, however, goes the extra mile, staying right until you head to get married. On hand for those little touch-ups, so you know everything will look truly perfect!
Also, knowing that Helen only takes on one wedding per day, so whatever happens, she’s only a text message or phone call away! How fabulous and reassuring must that be?!
To follow on with my recent feature of asking for planning advice from my suppliers, here are Helen’s top wedding tips:
- Start the planning the day after you get engaged!! Start the planning early so you can get the suppliers that you want.
- Get plenty of sleep the night before the wedding!
- Drink plenty of water the night before
- Have the paracetamol on hand!
- Take labels off things before the day, or when you first get the dresses out!
- Chill out and relax! Come the day of the wedding, there’s nothing you can do anyway, so you might as well just enjoy it. Have the best day of your life.
